ow I Built a Shopify App: Lessons from a SaaS Founder

By Rahim Badsa · August 25, 2026 · 8 min read

In early 2026, Shopify announced they were killing Stocky. Millions of merchants needed a replacement. I built one.

The Idea

Shopify's Stocky app was being discontinued August 31, 2026. Existing alternatives cost $50-$120/month. Most small merchants couldn't afford that. I saw an opportunity to build a free alternative.

The Tech Stack

Lessons Learned

1. Ship Fast, Iterate Later

I launched in 3 months with core features. I didn't wait for perfection.

2. Talk to Users Every Day

Every feature request came from real merchant conversations. Build what they need, not what you think they need.

3. Free Is a Powerful Marketing Strategy

The free plan generates word-of-mouth. Merchants recommend tools that don't cost money.

4. Security Is Not Optional

AES-256 encryption, multi-tenant isolation, 118 automated tests — build for production from day one.

5. Content Marketing Drives Organic Traffic

20 blog posts, 4 feature pages, and 1 landing page generate more traffic than any paid ad.

Results

After 3 months: 50+ merchants, 118 tests passing, 19K lines of code, and growing. The journey is just beginning.
